چکیده

This retrospective study was designed to identify the predictors of long-term survival outcomes after radical esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients aged 65 years or older. The clinical and follow-up data of 143 patients aged 65 years or older with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma undergoing radical esophagectomy were analyzed for prognostic factors of long-term survival outcomes. The median age was 71 years (range, 65-76 years). Of the total patient number, 44 had some form of comorbidity diagnosed preoperatively. Thirtyone patients presented with postoperative 30-day complications. The 5-year overall survival rate for this cohort was 46% (Figure 1). The 5-year overall survival rates after radical esophagectomy were 73%, 62%, and 29%, respectively, in pathologic stage I, pathologic stage II, and pathologic stage III. Advanced pathologic stage and medical comorbidities were significant independent predictors of shortened overall survival. Elderly patients with operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in this study had a satisfactory long-term outcomes and low mortality rate.

Minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients

The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the value of minimally invasive esophagectomy (combined thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients (≥70 years). From January 2009 to December 2014, 58 consecutive patients aged older than 70 years with clinical stage stage I or II esophageal squamous cell carcinoma underwent mini...

Very long-term outcomes of minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE The most critical parameter in the evaluation of the effectiveness of minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is long-term outcome. In this study, patients in whom more than 5 years had elapsed since they had undergone minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal SCC were identified, and the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate and 5-year disease-fr...

Asymptomatic Diaphragmatic Hernia Diagnosed after Six Years Following Esophagectomy: A Case Report

Diaphragmatic hernia, secondary to transhiatal esophagectomy, appears to be a relatively infrequent diagnosis. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with various symptoms. Diagnosis of this condition requires a high index of suspicion. The most common cause of diaphragmatic hernia is widened esophageal hiatus during surgery; therefore, narrowing the hiatus can prevent conduit herniation. Here...
